Bush publicly apologised for inviting Iraqi insurgents to take their best shot against American troops, but his words refuse to die. Out of all the off-message, inciting and repellent things the president has said throughout the years of this war, he has never been able to live this July 2, 2003, quote down :
There are some who feel like -- that the conditions are such that they can attack us there. My answer is, bring them on.
He can't live it down for one good reason. The slaughter of American troops since that invitation has been appalling, more than 3300 in total.
Churchill will be remembered for "We'll fight them on the beaches..." Bush will probably be remembered for "Bring Them On."
